"We have to make sure the [DSST] model of emphasizing the community and the individual spreads through Colorado. DSST is having results better than we dared to imagine."
- Lt. Gov., Barbara O'Brien

DSST provides a program that fosters participation and enjoyment of interscholastic team competition, as well as non-competitive fitness activities. The athletic program emphasizes high level skill and strategies, teamwork, good sportsmanship, school spirit, character building and fun. The goal is to provide each student with a sense of affiliation, motivation, and accomplishment by balancing a challenging experience with support and encouragement. The non-competitive fitness options, which include activities like yoga, weight training, kickboxing, ultimate Frisbee, Nike Golf and roller hockey, emphasize the acquisition of fundamental life-long skills.
DSST is a fifth-year member of the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) which regulates and develops the interscholastic school athletic program. DSST is classified under the 3A Frontier League which includes the following schools:  The Academy, Arrupe Jesuit, Bennett, Clear Creek, Jefferson Academy, Lake County High School, Middle Park High School, The Pinnacle, Platte Canyon and Sheridan High School. Sports sanctioned by the Frontier League are soccer, basketball, volleyball, and baseball. Tennis and Cross Country are independent of the Frontier League.

The athletic program is an integral part of DSST's curriculum and emphasizes living the school's core values. In order to fulfill graduation requirements, students must successfully participate in an athletic activity each year. Students must remain in good academic standing in order to be eligible to participate in athletics and all school rules and policies apply to athletics.
